| Latinas and the November 2006 Ballot
|

|
The issues on the November 2006 ballot will affect the lives of Latinas and their families. Thus, Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR) is actively working to promote three ballot issues that directly affect Latina reproductive health and freedom. We encourage our constituents, supporters, and friends to use their votes in November’s election to support Latinas and their families.
The following describes the three ballot issues upon which COLOR has taken a position and how they affect Latina reproductive rights and health:
Minimum Wage – SUPPORT - Amendment 42 would raise the minimum wage in Colorado to $6.85 an hour and would require the wage to increase with the rate of inflation each year. COLOR believes that workers should earn a fair, living wage for their labor. Latinas require a living wage to support their families and to truly have access to a full range of life opportunities. While COLOR does not believe that Amendment 42 goes far enough to establish a living wage in Colorado, we support the minimum wage proposal because it is a step in the right direction.
Domestic Partnerships – SUPPORT - Referendum I would create legal rights for committed same sex partners, including the right to visit a partner in the hospital; to make medical decisions for an incapacitated partner; to make funeral arrangements; to direct nursing home care; and to secure basic property and inheritance rights. COLOR believes that domestic partnerships are a civil rights issue. All people should have the right to look after and support their loved ones. COLOR supports Referendum I because we support our Latina lesbian sisters, our Latino gay brothers and our Latino/a transgender cousins.
Pre-School Funding – SUPPORT - Referred Question 1A, which applies only to voters in the City of Denver, would increase the sales tax in Denver by 12 cents on each $100 purchase to create tuition credits to fund preschool for ALL 4-year olds in Denver. For Latinas to be enabled and prepared to raise children, they must have educational and childcare resources available for their children. Thus, COLOR supports Referred Question 1A because it promotes Latina reproductive health and rights by supporting the right of Latinas and all women to have and raise children.
COLOR is hosting a Cafécito for Fairness on Saturday October 21st from 3:00 - 5:00 pm at 1714 W. 33rd Ave. Join COLOR and Coloradans for Fairness as we discuss the November 2006 ballot issues over coffee and pan dulce. Our Cafécito will focus on the three ballot issues described above, and we will have a voting guide available to describe the other issues that will appear on the ballot.
