Time, faith, unity will eventually get us there

It has been one year since President Obama was officially inaugurated as President of our country. The nation’s people had elected a man who offered solutions to our troubled nation.

It has been a long time since people were drawn together for a common cause in changing a hopeless situation.

Now, a year later it seems all he is receiving is condemnation. I say give the man a break – he’s had only one year to reverse eight years of massive and corrupt destruction due to past leadership.

We have experienced one of the worst recessions since the depression. This country’s financial gluttony has gone beyond shameless. President Obama and his administration did not initiate the disgrace of this nation. To me, I view President Obama and his administration as the new tenant of a former crack house; trying to renovate and rebuild a better community. He is trying to clean up the neighborhood, rid the area of those who prey on the poor, and shine a light on the cucas and their dirty deeds; and still taking pot shots from the former tenants.

And while the President is also trying to extinguish the flames of former tragedies across the world – he is barraged with criticism from every spectrum of the country.

Immigrant rights groups are upset because he has not done enough or acted fast enough to reform immigration policies. Recently, columnist Earl Ofari Hutchison wrote that Blacks think President Obama has lacked efforts to rectify poverty in their community. The LGBT community is frustrated with lack of support for their rights. Peace activists want the President to end the wars -- now. Various liberal organizations and columnists are attacking from every angle on a variety of issues. Even some Democrats have criticized. And Republicans – well they will never be happy with the President and will continue to produce nonsense, trying to detract from the tragedies caused by their former leadership.

Although I agree with these many requests, they are simply impossible to resolve in one year. At least the Obama administration is listening to our agendas. The last administration blatantly dismissed us all together.

How soon we forget. Remember the horrifying images of Hurricane Katrina; remember Blackwater and the not-guilty verdicts; remember constant immigration raids and the families destroyed; remember the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have lost their jobs and homes; remember health care or lack thereof; remember the failures of our education system; remember numerous legislative agendas passed to pad the pockets of the wealthy; and remember war crimes and the human collateral damage of an unjust war?

How did we forget about the past? Unfortunately, we are still suffering from the past actions – but at least President Obama is striving to right the wrongs. It just isn’t fast enough for a human society who is so used to instant gratification.

This past year working with the Obama administration has been exceptionally pleasant. Never in The Weekly Issue/El Semanario’s twenty year history has the White House opened its doors to Latino media in such a gracious manner. Bilingual news and media invitations from the White House overwhelm our newsdesk on a daily basis. This administration encourages all people to participate, and as the President has said the White House belongs to the people.

On our website we offer weekly news directly from the White House in both languages. Read for yourself what the President and his administration are doing to alter the course of our country (www.elsemanario.net and click on the White House icon).

Be patient, I do believe this administration will correct many issues, maybe not exactly as we all prefer, but I do think it will be a substantial change from former leadership.
