The true art of folklorico dance comes to life every time Denver’s own Grupo Folklorico Sabor Latino steps on the stage, gracing its audience with the passion, skill and charismatic professionalism which distinguish the Grupo from any other folklorico dance groups in Colorado.
Sabor Latino was founded in 1987 under the artistic direction of Lorenzo J. Ramírez and has been thriving ever since. Committed to the preservation and performance of the diverse dances that reflect México’s many regions and cultures, the Denver based dance group has maintained a professional level of performance, making the Grupo stand out from the rest. Sabor Latino has performed at several major cultural events across Colorado and throughout the country, and has had the opportunity to train with some of México’s elite folklorico dance instructors.
For their exquisite style and poise, Sabor Latino has received several awards over the years, including the 1998 Colorado Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the 1997 Denver Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, and the Colorado Council on the Arts Fellowship Award for Dance Choreography. Most recently, the Grupo has received a grant from the Colorado Council on the Arts, for a Folkloric Dance Intensive, which will provide funding to Sabor Latino to bring in two professional folklorico dance instructors from the U.S. and México to further enhance the skills of its dancers.
“Sabor Latino is more professional - from the costumes and the makeup – the visuals are great. And of course, the performances are done with the highest of skill. Lorenzo is a great instructor and he demands that our dances reflect our abilities,” commented Nicole Bercera, who has been dancing with the group for nine years.
