Selecting Sonia Sotomayor as a nominee for the United States Supreme Court was a brilliant and praised move by President Barack Obama. Not only is this a monumental act by nominating the first Latina to serve in this role, but an opportunity to increase the balance of equality in this country.
It is important to address that it’s quite significant Ms. Sotomayor is a Latina, but is not the sole reason for her selection as a nominee. She is extremely qualified, despite her opponents’ weak criticism. Their fear is based on her “liberal” views, meaning she is a compassionate human being and will likely challenge – and hopefully change -- the decades-long conservative actions of the supreme court.
It’s with pride and gratitude we share comments from across the country offering meaningful support to Ms. Sotomayor.
As someone who has appointed dozens of judges at the state level, I have some sense of how serious a responsibility this is. I congratulate President Obama for nominating someone who has such a diverse record of excellence, integrity and respect for the Constitution. Hers is a genuine American success story. From her modest upbringing, to her work as a criminal prosecutor, to her tenure on the district court and appellate benches, she is an inspiration.
