Now more than ever

One of my favorite pastimes is listening to stories from our Elders. There is a certain sense of calmness in me when I have these discussions, it let’s me know that they lived through great hardships in their lives and are able to keep the peace and maintain a kind heart. Our Elders are treasures that offer us invaluable lessons, we just need to sit down and listen.
One such person is Magdalena Gallegos, a longtime writer with The Weekly Issue/El Semanario and a dear friend. This week she begins her latest project, a column titled “Straight From My Heart”. Magdalena will share her knowledge, her life experiences and her wisdom with the gentle kindness she is best known for.
Reviewing into this week’s news it just reminded me how history has a way of repeating itself. As humans we have always battled some form of discrimination. We have endured earthly disasters, we have witnessed great suffering, and somehow we continue to survive and create change for the next generation.
Action that was reminiscent of the 60s and 70s took place on Tuesday, as fourteen individuals were arrested by Denver Police officers to indicate their determination in urging immigration reform this year by Congress and the President.
In another article this week, four women and a brave ten year-old traveled to Washington, DC earlier this month to testify before a special Congressional hearing convened by Representative Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ); sharing stories that have been told before, but this time there with hope for progressive action. Colorado Representative Jared Polis praised the women for their courage with simple words they will always remember.
Drawing attention to another form of discrimination is an article highlighting a new film project by the Southern Poverty Law Center, sharing the story of Jamie Nabozny and his tragic battles in school as a gay young man. The Center hopes to raise funds to send this film to over 25,000 schools; this is an often overlooked issue that needs all of our attention – this issue is so important and pertains to all our children. They need to be guided at an early age onto the steps of humanity.
