Family love is key in supporting LGBTQ children

By Toni Frésquez

worthy of their unconditional love; and being gay is not a crime, despite the societal and religious brainwashing myths.
A child is born with the genetic makeup provided to them through their biological parents’ DNA. It is a scientific fact that LGBTQ individuals do not have a choice. Just as we all have no choice whether we are born with brown or blonde hair, brown or green eyes, or the color of our skin – it is in our genes.
The alternative for LGBTQ children who are not given acceptance in life is horrifying – the suicide rate for these children is over 70% according to a recent report. Others resort to drugs and alcohol to mask their deep and emotional pain.
“You have to start with the family, now we know how harmful it is for gay kids not to be accepted, not to be loved, and to be victimized. the more we talk about it, and the more people embrace their gay children and form families where they are accepted and loved—and not discriminated—they will thrive, the kids will thrive,” said Leonora, mother of a lesbian daughter,
with two grandchildren.
There are many resources available to parents and families of LGBTQ children across the state that offers a variety of support. The Family Acceptance Project website offers with a very touching video about one Latino family’s true love for each other –http://familyproject.sfsu.edu/home.
