Kids, teens: Free summer meals across metro area

Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock and local sponsors t kicked-off Denver‘s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) this week, which will provide free meals to nearly 12,000 children daily.
“Summer break is a time when many of Denver’s children have limited access to healthy and nutritious foods,” Mayor Hancock said. “This collaborative program will help ensure our most vulnerable children are receiving consistent meals throughout the summer months.”
This year, the SFSP has been expanded to a summer-long service that will be implemented through a partnership between the City of Denver, Denver Public Schools, Food Bank of the Rockies and Hunger Free Colorado. This program is available to children under the age of 18, with more than 90 sites located at various Denver parks, recreation centers, libraries, schools, churches and non-profits through Aug. 24.
“Our mission at DPS is to ‘feed every child every day,’” Theresa Hafner, DPS Food Service Executive Director, said. “As a longtime partner of the SFSP, we are thrilled to see the community continue to come together to grow the program to what it is today.”
On Monday, June 11 at 10:30 a.m, Healing Waters Family Center, 6475 W. 29th Ave, Wheat Ridge, NBA Fit clinic will provide fitness activities for kids in the day program; Chef Mark DeNittis will provide a Cooking Matters cooking demonstration for kids; 11:30 a.m. Denver Nuggets Dance Team will help serve summer meals to kids.
Families can call 1-877-93HUNGER, go to SummerFoodColorado.org or text ‘FOOD’ to 720-HFC-EAT5 (720-432-3285) to find a summer meals site.
