The OxCart/ La Carreta,

Photo: Mica Garcia de Benavidez El Centro Su Teatro’s production of The Oxcart features Sherry Coca Candelaria as Germana, and Yolanda Ortega Ericksen as Doña Gabriela.

El Centro Su Teatro proudly presents the final weekend of The OxCart/ La Carreta, May 5, 6 and 7 at 8:05 pm. The landmark Latino play is written by Rene Marques and directed by Phil Luna.

TheOxCart/ La Carreta is the story of a family’s journey from the mountains of Puerto Rico to the crowded streets of San Juan to the jungles of Manhattan. A family seeking a better life in a mechanized world, struggling to maintain culture, identity and family.

The OxCart features Su Teatro Company Members Yolanda Ortega Ericksen (Doña Rosita’s Jalapeño Kitchen), Magally Rizo Antuna (The Westside Oratorio), and Vicente Olan (Santos and Santos). They are joined by an incredible supporting cast including Su Teatro actors Angel Mendez Soto, Sherry Coca Candelaria, Ivette Visbal and Phil Luna, new to Su Teatro’s stage Theresa Carpio Downs and Sandra Zuniga Silva , and introducing Jonah Madrid.

The Oxcart is an outstanding example of the literary genius of Rene Marques, one of Puerto Rico’s foremost contemporary playwrights. A Puerto Rican family’s transition from a small, rural area to a San Juan slum and eventually to a barrio of New York City is portrayed in a straightforward manner and in simple language. The theme is uniquely Puerto Rican, but has universal appeal. The Oxcart itself pleads for a return to “the land which gives life” as opposed to the false values of a mechanized society which can only degrade and destroy an individual and rob her of dignity.

A struggle to survive, to live, to love, and to be. A family’s hope for happiness. An incredibly moving play.

All performances are at El Centro Su Teatro, 4725 High St, April 14- May 7 2005, Thursday – Saturday, at 8:05 pm. Tickets are $13 general admission, ...
