Denver’s famed El Centro Su Teatro recently announced their schedule for the 2010- 2011 theatrical season. This onth, Su Teatro takes the stage in their first complete season at their new home; the Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center @ the Denver Civic Theatre. Returning to the roots of company created work, Artistic Director Anthony J. García directs a full season of all new work. This year, Su Teatro offers a year of productions that are uniquely Su Teatro, as the company of artists create, adapt and present and exciting season of work, an authentic experience performed uniquely by one of the countries oldest and most lauded Chicano theaters.
The mainstage theater season begins on October 16th with The Lamented Last Dance at the Rainbow Ballroom: El Louie and Other Post Pachuco Dreams, based on the poems of José Montoya, adapted by Anthony J. García and Daniel Valdez; and music by Daniel Valdez.
The season opener is a re-examination of the work of Royal Chicano Air Force poet José Montoya, beginning with his classic poem, El Louie. Set on the last night of el Rainbow Ballroom in the 1950’s, it is a parade of the musicos, the cantantes, the lovers, the dreamers, and the fools that passed through its doors.
An opening reception is planned for the October 16th performance and to celebrate the first official event at the Teatro, as the deal was sealed last week. Tix for the reception are $35 and includes champagne, face time with the award winning creative team of Tony Garcia (United States Artist Fellow, TCG Directors Fellowship,) and Daniel Valdez (Zoot Suit, La Bamba,) that brought you El Sol Que Tu Eres/The Sun That You Are and Westside Oratorio and time with our honored guest, poet laureate José Montoya.
